LEVEL 1: BASIC MOTORCYCLE MAINTENANCE AND RIDING COURSE.

The Level 1 course is of 6hr duration and is designed as an introduction to the maintenance and safe operation of a Motorcycle in a rural application.

The course starts by covering a thorough check of the Motorcycle from the ground up to ensure that the bike will be kept in a manner which will allow it be ridden safely and reliably whenever necessary. Checks include daily, weekly and monthly inspections and go over the importance of regular servicing. Local conditions are taken into consideration and discussed with the students to identify any specific problems that could arise from location or manner of operation. Students are taught how perform the required routine servicing whilst checking various aspects of the vehicle and how any problems found should be reported or noted for follow up/repairs.

Protective clothing is then be discussed with the aim of showing the group what is available to them when riding, how to decide which equipment will best suit their needs for the type of riding they are involved in and the correct fitment/sizing of the protective equipment available. We carry a large selection of gear for the students to examine or try if they wish.

The riding component of the training is designed to cater for the rider with some prior experience even if only marginal. The areas covered include low speed manoeuvres, high speed manoeuvres (max speed around 40kph) and the mental skills involved in the safe operation of a motorcycle in a variety of situations. Practice is achieved by the use of a range of exercises designed to help the student in the key areas of clutch control, throttle control, eye direction, cornering, braking and obstacle avoidance. All lessons are designed to flow on from each other so as to reinforce the skills taught in the previous lesson. At the end of the day the students will participate in an exercise structured to cover all previous lessons so they will get the opportunity to not only combine all the prior exercises but also to have a bit of fun with what has been covered throughout the day.

The main aim of the course is to achieve a safe and responsible attitude to the daily operation and maintenance of the vehicle and to give the students an understanding of some of the basics of motorcycle control that, with further practice, will help the student to becoming a competent rider.

Prior to the commencement of any course the Instructors will talk to the students to assess the general experience level of the group so that the class can be tailored to better suit those attending. ALL students must have full skin cover i.e. Helmet, eye protection (sunnies at least) gloves, shoes/boots, long sleeves and long pants. Motorcycles are to be provided by the customer and should be in a good, safe condition.
